仮定法の基本

仮定法と直接法

If you are serious, we will employ you.
(もしあなたがまじめなら、あなたを雇うだろう。)
→実際にあなたがまじめかどうかわからない

If you were serious, we would employ you.
(もしあなたがまじめなら、あなたを雇うだろうに。)
→実際にあなたがまじめではないことが確定

 

仮定法過去(過去形を用いた現在のことについての仮定)

If it were[was] fine, we would go.
(もし晴れなら、出かけるのに。)

If I had enough time and money, I would travel around the world.
(もし十分な時間とお金があれば、世界中を旅行するのに。)

 

仮定法過去の公式

If + 主語 +動詞の過去形…, 主語 +
{
would
could
might
}
+ 原形…

 

 

仮定法過去完了(過去完了形を用いた過去のことについての仮定)

If I had left five minutes earlier, I would not have missed the train.
(もし5分早く出発していたら、列車に乗り遅れることはなかっただろうに。)

He would have died if the climber had not found him.
(もしその登山者が彼を見つけていなかったら、彼は死んでいただろう。)

 

仮定法過去完了の公式

If + 主語 + had + 過去分詞…, 主語 +
{
would
could
might
}
+ have + 過去分詞…

* 仮定法過去と仮定法過去完了が混じることもある。
例:If I had taken the medicine then, I might be fine now.
(もしあの時その薬を飲んでいたら、私は今元気になっているかもしれないのに。)

 

未来の仮定法

If an earthquake should happen, what would you do?
(万一地震が起こったとしたら、あなたはどうしますか。)

If the sun were to rise in the west, I would not change my mind.
(仮に太陽が西から昇るようなことがあっても、私は決心を変えない。)

ifを用いない仮定法表現

ifを省略して倒置

Were I you, I would not buy such a thing.
(もし私があなたなら、そのような物は買わないだろう。)

Had I known you were in the hospital, I would have visited you.
(もしあなたが入院していると知っていたら、私はお見舞いに行ったのに。)

Should you meet him, tell him to write to me.
(万一彼に会ったら、私に手紙を書くように言ってください)

 

wish

I wish I were a bird.
(もし私が鳥だったらなあ。)

I wish I hadn’t bought such an expensive bag.
(あんな高いバッグを買わなければよかったなあ。)

I wish I could swim as fast as you.
(君と同じくらい速く泳げたらなあ。)

* wishはあり得ないことを願う、hopeはあり得ることを願う

as if

He talks as if he were a professional baseball player.
(彼はまるでプロ野球選手であるかのように話す。)

You look as if you had seen a ghost!
(君はまるで幽霊でも見たかのような顔色だよ!)

* as ifの後が直説法になることもある

~がなければ、~があれば

Without[But for] water, no one could live.
If it were not for water, no one could live.
(水がなければ、誰も生きられないだろう。)

 Without[But for] your goal, we would have lost the game.
If it had not been for your goal, we would have lost the game.
(君のゴールがなかったら、試合に負けていただろう。)

With your advice, she would not have failed in business.
(あなたの忠告があったら、彼女は事業に失敗せずにすんだだろうに。)

 

it’s time

It’s time you bought a new computer.
(もう新しいコンピュータを買ってもいい時期だよ。)

It’s high time the children went to bed.
(子どもはとっくに寝る時間だよ。)

 

その他

She worked really hard; otherwise she couldn’t have passed the exam.
(彼女は本当に一生懸命勉強した。そうでなければ、彼女は試験に合格できなかっただろう。)

To hear him talk, you would think he is Japanese.
(彼が話しているのを聞くと、あなたは彼が日本人だと思うでしょう。)

A man of sense would not do such a thing.
(常識のある人ならそんなことはしないだろう。)

Born in better days, she might have been a scientist.
(もっとよい時代に生まれていたら、彼女は科学者になっていたかもしれない。)

If only he were here!
(彼がここにいさえすればなあ!)

I would rather you didn’t smoke.
(たばこを吸わないでいただきたいのですが。)
