主格

所有格

目的格

The man (whom[who]) we met on the street is our new teacher.
(私たちが通りで出会った男性は、私たちの新しい先生だ。)

I’m reading a book (which) I borrowed from the library.
(私は、図書館から借りた本を読んでいる。)

thatが好まれる場合

She talked about the people and the things that had fascinated her during her trip.
(彼女は、旅行中に自分の興味を引いた人々や物事の話をした。)

This is the very book (that) I’ve been looking for.
(これはまさに私が探し求めていた本です。)

* 先行詞が人と人以外のものであったり、強調されている場合に使われることが多い。

前置詞+関係代名詞

 He is the actor to whom I sent a fan letter.
=He is the actor who[whom] I sent a fan letter to.
(彼は、私がファンレターを送った俳優だ。)

This is the city in which I was born.
=This is the city which I was born in.
(これは、私が生まれた町だ。)

The house of which you can see the red roof is ours.
=The house whose red roof you can see is ours.
(赤い屋根が見える家が、私たちの家です。)

what(=the thing which)の基本的用法

What seems to be difficult at first often proves to be quite easy.
(最初は難しく見えたことがとても簡単だとしばしばわかる。)

They couldn’t believe what they saw.
(彼らは自分たちが見たものを信じられなかった。)

They watch is just what I wanted.
(この腕時計はまさに私がほしかったものだ。)

whatの慣用表現

I owe what I am to my parents.
(私は今の私を両親に負っている→今日私があるのは両親のおかげです。)He is what is called a walking dictionary.
(彼は生き字引と呼ばれるものだ→彼はいわゆる生き字引だ。)

He is always late, and what is more, leaves the office early.
(彼はいつも遅刻して、おまけに早く退勤する。)

What with working and housekeeping, I’m very busy.
(仕事やら家事やらで、私は大変忙しい。)

Reading is to the mind what exercising is to the body.
(読書と知性の関係は、運動と身体の関係と同じだ。)

I gave him what little money I had.
=I gave him all the little money I had.
(私は、なけなしのお金をすべて彼に与えた。)

擬似関係代名詞(as, than, but)

He has the same cap as I’m wearing.
(彼は、私がかぶっているのと同じ帽子を持っている。)

As is often the case with him, he was late for school.
(彼にはよくあることだが、学校に遅刻した。)

You shouldn’t buy more food than you can eat.
(食べられる以上の食べ物を買うべきではない。)

There is no rule but has exceptions.
=There is no rule that doesn’t have exceptions.
(例外のない規則はない。)

(地球上に恐竜が生きていた時代がありました。)

This is the largest park where we can play soccer.
=This is the largest park in which we can play soccer.
(これは私たちがサッカーをすることのできる最も広い公園だ。)

Tell me the reason why you look so happy today.
=Tell me the reason for which you look so happy today.
(今日、そんなにうれしそうに見える理由を教えてよ。)

I like children. That is why I want to be a teacher.
(私は子どもが好きだ。それが私が先生になりたい理由だ
→私は子どもが好きだ。そういうわけで私は先生になりたい。)

This is the way he solved the problem.
=This is how he solved the problem.
=This is the way in which he loved the problem.
(これが彼がその問題を解決したやり方だ。)

That is how he succeeded in business.
(それが彼がビジネスに成功した方法だ
そのようにして、彼はビジネスに成功した。)

* the way とhowを同時に使うことはできない。

限定用法(コンマなし)と継続用法(コンマ付き)

次の各組の2文の違いは何か。

    1. He has two sons who work in France.(彼にはフランスで働いている2人の息子がいる。)[別の場所で働いている息子がいるかもしれない]
    2. He has two sons, who work in France.(彼には2人の息子がいて、その息子たちはフランスで働いている。
    1. My wife who lives in Paris has sent me a letter.(パリに住んでいる私の妻は私に手紙を送った。)[別の場所に住んでいる妻がいるかもしれない]
    2. My wife, who lives in Paris, has sent me a letter.(私の妻は、パリに住んでいるのだが、その妻は私に手紙を送った。

ヒント:継続用法(コンマがある場合)は基本的に前から切って訳す。

(好きなものをどれでも注文していいよ。)

Don’t listen to whatever he may say.
=Don’t listen to anything which he may say.
(彼の言うことは何でも聞いてはいけない。)

On holidays, we can get up whenever we want to.
=On holidays, we can get up any time when we want to.
(休日には、いつでも好きなときに起きることができる。)

Please sit wherever you like.
=Please sit any place where you like.
どこでもお好きなところに座ってください。)

何が、誰が、いつ… ~しようとも[譲歩]

 Whoever calls me, I don’t want to answer the phone.
No matter who calls me, I don’t want to answer the phone.
だれが電話をかけてこようと、私は電話に出たくない。) Whichever you buy, you will be satisfied.
No matter which you buy, you will be satisfied.
どれを買って、満足するでしょう。)

Whatever happens, I will always love you.
No matter what happens, I will always love you.
何が起ころうと、あなたのことをいつも愛しています。)

Whenever you may visit him, you’ll find him away from home.
No matter when you may visit him, you’ll find him away from home.
